What Is HHW?

Household Hazardous Waste (commonly referred to as HHW) includes a variety of everyday household items, such as cleaners, paints, herbicides, insecticides, and solvents that exhibit the characteristics of regulated hazardous waste. Regulated hazardous waste means items that are flammable, combustible, corrosive, reactive, or toxic and would be harmful to the environment if thrown into a regular landfill.

HHW isn’t considered waste until you need to dispose of the items. If you are unsure if an item is hazardous, first check the product’s label. Warnings such as “poison or toxic”, “flammable or ignitable”, “corrosive” indicate an HHW item. Cleaners that contain strong acids, bleach or ammonia are also hazardous. Check here for examples of household hazardous waste accepted onsite at RRRASOC HHW events.

What To Do?

Residents of RRRASOC Member Communities may bring household hazardous waste to household hazardous waste collection events. These events provide residents with an opportunity to safely discard or recycle hazardous items, including e-waste. This program is offered in conjunction with our HHW processing partner, ERG Environmental Services. A list of acceptable HHW can be found here.

How TO HANDLE?

Handle household hazardous waste products with care. Keep products in original containers and don’t mix products together. Containers should be tightly sealed, packed in a box in an upright, stable position and transported in the trunk of a car or bed of a truck. Please package batteries separate from light bulbs to reduce risk of breakage.
